“We were struggling with major drainage issues between our house and workshop, but they completely transformed the area. They smoothed out the old, overgrown creek bed to restore proper flow and carefully regraded the entire slope to ensure water finally moves AWAY from our foundations. It’s rare to find a crew so professional, prompt, and thorough with their cleanup. Katy's soils are from the Katy series: deep, moderately well-drained loamy sediments, with silty clay loams. Spanning counties, they differ from Fulshear's uplands by better permeability but similar alkalinity. Less clay than Sugar Land, aiding agriculture but requiring amendments for stability.
Katy's flat prairie land and clay-heavy soils make drainage tricky for everyone, especially with heavy rains that can turn streets into temporary rivers even if homes stay dry. On small lots (typical suburban yards), common issues include standing water near foundations from poor grading or clogged gutters/downspouts, soggy spots that lead to foundation cracks or mold, and runoff overwhelming storm drains causing street flooding that backs up into driveways or yards. At Neptune Solutions, we solve these with precise land grading to create proper slopes, custom French drains and swales to redirect water away from your home, and thorough excavation to fix pooling before it damages your foundation. On larger acreage lots (more rural or outlying properties), problems often involve widespread ponding across open fields due to low slopes and limited natural drainage, erosion along ditches or low areas from unmanaged runoff, and increased risks from upstream development sending extra water your way, which can flood driveways, barns, or pastures during big storms. We tackle these head-on with large-scale site preparation, professional drainage system design (like enhanced swales, culverts, and channels), and strategic grading to promote better flow and prevent erosion across bigger properties.
Katy sits pretty low overall, ranging from about 60 to 150 feet above sea level, and those lower spots near bayous or reservoirs like Addicks and Barker flood easily because the flat land and clay soils let water hang around way too long. Higher ground drains naturally much better, cuts down on ponding during big rains or hurricanes like Harvey, and often means lower flood insurance costs since building codes push for structures to sit above floodplain levels.
Since Katy spreads across Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties (plus the City of Katy itself), the process depends on exactly where your project is, but generally you submit plans, a drainage report, and fees to the county engineering department or city portal. They review everything for floodplain rules and “no adverse impact” standards, which usually takes 2-6 weeks, then you’ll have inspections before final approval. If permitting is required, we'll get it handled and communicate with you throughout the process.
Katy’s loamy clay soils love to expand when wet and shrink when dry, so good compaction removes air pockets, boosts the ground’s strength, and keeps foundations from settling or cracking over time. It also helps water move through (or away) more predictably, reducing erosion and drainage headaches in our flood-prone area.
